What care is recommended after implants?
After implant surgery, the goal is simple: protect the healing process while keeping everything clean. For the first few days, most patients do best with rest, ice, and a soft diet. Avoid smoking, vaping, alcohol, and strenuous exercise early on, because they can slow healing and increase complications. If you were given prescriptions (pain medicine, antibiotics, or an antimicrobial rinse), take them exactly as directed.
Oral hygiene is still important, but it should be gentle at first. We typically recommend brushing carefully around the surgical area, using any rinse we prescribe, and avoiding aggressive swishing or spitting for the first day. Don’t use straws early on. As tenderness improves, you’ll transition into a normal routine that keeps plaque off the gums and around the bridge, because implants can fail if the tissue becomes chronically inflamed.
Food choices matter during healing. Stick to softer foods at first and avoid anything hard, crunchy, or sticky that could put too much pressure on the implants or loosen a temporary bridge. Over the next several weeks, we’ll guide you on when to advance your diet safely. You’ll also have scheduled follow-up visits so we can check healing, adjust your bite if needed, and confirm everything is integrating the way it should.
Long term, implants need the same kind of maintenance as natural teeth—sometimes more. Daily brushing, flossing (or a water flosser), and cleaning under the bridge are essential, along with regular professional cleanings. Most patients also benefit from a night guard if they grind or clench. With consistent home care and routine checkups, implant bridges can stay comfortable, healthy, and stable for many years.
